Oregon Brewers Fest Recommendations, Observations

Patrick and I used the Oregon Brewers Fest as an occasion to consider the kinds of beers people are making these days in the latest podcast, and also to offer a few beers that caught our fancy. Here's the Soundcloud version, but the Beervana Podcast is also available on iTunes and Google Play.

As promised, here are our personal choices:

Patrick
  • Anchor Mango Wheat
  • Bent Paddle Venture Pilsner
  • Breakside Pomegranate Gose
  • Culmination Deutschland Down Under
  • Ex Novo All of the Things
  • Fort George Dirty Snowball
  • Iwate Kura Japanese Herb Ale Sancho
  • Ninkasi Grapefruit Sour
  • pFriem Mango Sour
  • Pints Lemon Curd ESB
Jeff
  • Buoy Dragon-Fruit Berliner Weisse
  • Burnside Cedar IPA
  • Gigantic Le Petit Bâtard Abeille
  • Jinga Koji Red Ale
  • No-Li Big Juicy
  • Oersoep Schnappi (A Dutch-speaker tells me the pn is "oar soup.")
  • August Schell Hefeweizen
  • Shiga Kogen Isseki Sancho
  • Van Mollen Luikse Vechter
And for the daredevils, we encourage you to give Zoiglhaus' Birra Pazza al Pesto a whirl.

Also, my extended list included these: 54-40 Ultra Pilsner, Bayern Citra Maibbock, Deschutes Sagefright, Drake's Foraging Raccoon, Pelican Chongie Saaz, Three Creeks Berry Porter, and Upright Wit. Hey, that's only a quarter of them!

  1. How many of those have you actually tried?

  2. I believe you would know the answer to that if you had listened to the podcast--and I certainly wouldn't want to rob of the pleasure of discovery!

  3. Ezra has a point. I haven't listened to the podcast, but I know you haven't tasted most, maybe all of these beers. Because they aren't out there to taste. Nice job pandering, though, based on descriptions and assumptions. This post is not up to your standards. Sorry.

  4. Standards?--this blog ain't got no standards! [Rim shot.]

But actually, no, it's neither a pander nor false advertising. We do recommend these beers and we do not claim to have tasted them. I don't mind so much that you blithely feel free to criticize something you haven't bothered to listen to, but maybe dismount your high horse before you start dishing out the moral judgments. Or, you know, listen to the podcast.

  5. Is there an inside joke I'm missing as a non-Oregon person here? How can you recommend beers you haven't tasted? Maybe it would be more accurate to say "here are the beers we're excited to try"?

If this isn't an inside joke, surely you can understand folks are reacting to recommendations of untasted beers, which you've put here in print, not to the unlistened-to podcast. The (eighty-three-minute-long!!!) podcast's status as listened to/not listened to seems besides the point.

  6. In response to the clueless comments above -
A knowledgeable person on a topic - an 'expert' by definition, with focused experiences in a field - can and should be able to gather basic information about that topic, and couple it with their experiences, and produce an opinion that is more than just a random guess like an amateur would give.
You don't have to have tried a beer to recommend it. Jeff knows almost all of these brewers, sometimes personally, and can see the many factors at play. He knows if a style is out of reach for that particular brewery. He knows previous examples of similar beers and how they taste. THIS IS WHAT AN EXPERT DOES. Jeff is also pretty clear about how he arrives at these opinions if you've ever read his material.

Dude wrote a book covering almost every conceivable modern beer style, travels the world researching beer, and you're giving him flack for giving recommendations? LOL. See you all on the waterfront, I'll be pouring all weekend myself and I hope you'll give new beers a try!

  7. Cool lets just eliminate judging competitions and awards and Jeff can just tell us who will win.

  8. No-Li Big Juicy is available in cans in every supermarket in town -- no sense taking up 3 ounces of your festival (this is not a judgment on the beer, just a tactical suggestion).

  9. This is a great place organize an event; they have great staff and great events put on here! I had nothing but great times and great conversations there. They served slider and shrimp cakes as appetizers at Chicago event venues with chicken skewers, and eggrolls that had veggies on the inside and some kind of creamy fruit sauce on top.

  10. Jeff, thanks!

    Ezra, now you're just trolling.

Bill, oh boy. I guess I should go to the grocery stores more often. And great to see you yesterday!
