Beer Prices: It Could Be Worse

Ouch:
An average pint in Britain has topped £3 following a 4p rise in the budget – making it the same price as a line of cocaine, according to official government figures. In London the average price of a pint – at £4.06 – is dearer than a hit of heroin.
Three pounds is currently $5.95. The London price is outrageous by Beervana standards--$8.05! The article continues, comparing the price of beer to other illegal drugs. Single pills of Ecstacy are going for £2.91, and a shot of heroin is £3.50.
The Campaign for Real Ale said: 'The latest tax increase will drive people away from community pubs, which help discourage the problem, to drink cheap supermarket alcohol at home, in streets and in parks.'
So, bad as beer prices may get here, it could be worse. (File under "misery loves company?")

  1. Wow, prices sure have changed since I lived there. Back in '99 pints went for between £1.96 for London Pride Bitter and £2.40 for Stella at my local (W14, southwest London). And, um, my "friends" tell me ecstasy was going for 2 for £25 or 3 for £40. Under £3 a pill is insane.
